Reuben Abel papers

These papers document the academic career of Reuben Abel (1911-1997), beginning with his education as an undergraduate student at Columbia College and doctoral philosophy student in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, and continuing throughout his professorship at the university. It includes course notes and syllabi from his academic work, and correspondence and other material documenting his student activities, such as his role as founder and editor of the New School student magazine, 12th Street: A Quarterly, and later his membership in the Alumni Association. Abel's papers reflect his position within the Graduate Faculty, consisting of correspondence with colleagues and deans, appointment letters, faculty minutes, and committee documents; in addition to his role as instructor and advisor to students, consisting of lecture notes, thesis committee work and doctoral exam requirement reviews. Affiliations as a scholar found in his papers include the Conference on Methods in Philosophy and Sciences and the American Society for Aesthetics. Contains one annotated typscript of his work,Man Is the Measure.

Adri fashion design business records

Mary Adrienne Steckling Coen (1934-2006) graduated from Parsons School of Design's Fashion Design Department in 1958. In 1966, "Adri" -- her professional name -- developed her own line and continued designing under her own labels for the rest of her career. In 1982, Adri received the prestigious Coty American Fashion Critics "Winnie" award. The records document Adri's business and professional life, with materials largely arranged according to year and season. Includes clippings and tear sheets, photographic materials, press kits, presentation portfolios, sketches, swatches, and video recordings.

Amos Parrish fashion merchandising clinic workbook

The workbook that comprises this collection was used during the Amos Parrish Fashion Merchandising Clinic, held in New York City, January 6-10, 1930. Parrish's clinic was offered once and sometimes twice annually from the 1920s through 1955 to forecast the year's trends for the fashion industry. This workbook belonged to Howard Phillips, merchandise manager for the Ernst Kern Department Store, Detroit, Michigan, and was heavily annotated by Phillips during his week at Parrish's clinic.

André and Creators Studios fashion drawings

André and Creators Studios were Seventh Avenue fashion businesses that marketed their designs to clothing manufacturers by subscription. In the mid-1970s Pearl Alexander Lipman, André's co-owner and designer since the 1930s, retired, and the company's design drawings were sold to Creators Studios. The collection consists of reproductions of designs -- some vibrantly hand-colored -- produced and distributed by the two companies between 1937 and 1972.

Emil Antonucci graphic design papers

Emil Antonucci (1929-2006) was a New York-based artist, graphic artist, book designer, illustrator, publisher, and teacher. This collection contains artwork and design project materials in a variety of mediums pertaining to his freelance design and artistic career. Dating from the 1950s through the 2000s, materials in the collection include original artwork; graphic design proofs and layouts; book and magazine interiors, illustrations, mechanicals, and Antonucci's writings. Included in this collection are items relating to the poetry of Robert Lax, whose poetry Antonucci published on his letterpresses, The Hand Press and Journeyman Press. Finally, a number of audio recordings of Antonucci's sound art and Lax's poetry readings are contained herein.

Dan Arje papers

Dan Arje (1923-1993) was a designer and display director for Bonwit Teller. The collection is primarily comprised of albums containing photographs and news clippings about Arje's displays, as well as correspondence regarding his decorating work for the White House during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, including the decoration of the White House Christmas tree. Also present are materials Arje collected about Bonwit Teller and Tiffany's designer Gene Moore.

Harry B. Baker papers

Harry B. Baker (1868-1941) was an illustrator who taught at the New York and Paris branches of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (which became Parsons School of Design) in the early 20th century. Before moving to New York, Baker traveled around the American West. He illustrated bar fights, cowboys, Native Americans, and street scenes. The collection includes photographs of Baker and his students, a letter from Frank Alvah Parsons, identity cards and papers, and illustrations by Baker, including one for the cover of Western Story magazine.

Jane Bannerman art and design work

Jane Campbell Bannerman studied graphic design and illustration at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now Parsons School of Design), graduating in 1930. She worked for several New York-based firms, including McMillen, Inc., as a graphic and interior designer, and later opened her own textile design and interior decorating business. The collection primarily consists of student work, commercial design work, and travel watercolors, as well as clippings, photographs, and printed materials.

Stanley Barrows papers

Stanley Barrows (1914-1995) graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1940 and taught interior design at the school for over twenty years, becoming mentor to several generations of notable designers. The collection includes examples of student work compiled by Barrows, course outlines, class travel itineraries, reference photographs of Italian decorative styles, biographical material, and correspondence from Barrows related to his activities as a designer and teacher.

Seth Benardete papers

The Seth Benardete Papers consist of the original contents of the classics scholar and philosopher's files from his office at New York University, where he taught for 35 years. The files document Benardete's teaching at The New School, NYU, and CUNY and scholarship, course materials; lecture notes and transcripts; typescripts; correspondence; publications; and more--totalling around 15,000 manuscript pages. Many of these files are now available electronically.

Bernard Design International renderings

Katherine Bosch student work

Portrait of Sophie Gimbel

Fashion illustration by René Robert Bouché depicting American fashion designer Sophie Gimbel. The illustration appeared in the April 15, 1961 issue of American Vogue with the caption, "Sophie's sari tactics for short evenings." Signed "RRB" in upper right-hand corner. Prior to the 2014 closure of the Adam and Sophie Gimbel Design Library, a framed reproduction of this illustration hung on a column at the entrance to Parsons School of Design's library in 2 West 13th Street.

René Bouché fashion illustrations

A celebrated portraitist and leader in fashion illustration, René Robert Bouché (1905-1963) was a visiting lecturer at Parsons School of Design in 1947. The collection, assembled by Jerry Silverman and Shannon Rodgers, consists of over 100 of Bouché's fashion illustrations, as well as a poster from a 1974 exhibition of his work at Parsons.

Roselaine Boylan student work

Advertising illustrations by Roselaine Boylan completed as a student at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now, Parsons School of Design). Boylan studied in the Graphic Advertising and Illustration Department in 1929-1930. The collection is comprised of five student assignments, probably executed for a third year advertising design class. The assignments consist of illustrated advertising displays executed in tempera and watercolor for the Grayline Tours bus company, Jell-O, Bloomingdale's department store, and Lord & Taylor.

Mary L. Brandt home furnishings training course materials

Mary Largent Brandt was an interior decorator, author, lecturer, and merchandising expert. In the 1940s, she developed a training course for retail sales staff to promote more effective merchandising of home furnishings. Included in this collection are Home Furnishings Training Course: Handbook of Home Furnishings (1946) and a binder entitled, Home Furnishings Training Course: Summary of Visual Chart Materials for Home Study and Reference (undated).

Tom Brigance fashion publicity and sketches

After graduating from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) in 1934, Tom Brigance (1913-1990) became a fashion designer specializing in women's swimwear and sportswear. Exclusive designer at Frank Gallant in the 1950s, Brigance won the fashion industry's Coty Award in 1953. The collection includes scrapbooks of clippings and photographs publicizing Brigance's designs, sketches, publicity materials, and four original fashion illustrations of Brigance swimwear by Dorothy Hood, produced for Lord & Taylor.

Donald Brooks papers

Donald Brooks (1928-2005) was a prominent American fashion designer who, in addition to creating ready-to-wear collections and custom apparel, designed costumes for film, television, and theater. He taught at Parsons School of Design for approximately forty years. The collection includes photographs, publicity materials, and original fashion and costume design sketches.

Constance P. Brown papers

Brown attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) from 1913 until 1917, and worked as secretary to Frank Alvah Parsons sometime in the teens or 1920s. The collection consists of postcards and a letter from Parsons to Brown, faculty announcements, school circulars and lecture advertisements, interior decoration class rolls, clippings from 1913-1934, and correspondence with the Parsons School of Design Alumni Association, 1944 and 1961.

Margaret Susan Daniell papers

Bruce Buttfield renderings and photographs

Interior decorator Bruce Buttfield (1897-1969) made his mark in the 1930s by creating distinctive furniture and rooms. In 1931, he designed the interior of the original Whitney Museum building on Eighth Street in New York City. The collection includes photographs and color renderings of Buttfield interiors.

Zack Carr papers

After graduating from Parsons School of Design Fashion Design Department in 1973, Zack Carr (1945-2000) worked for B. Altman, Donald Brooks and, most significantly, Calvin Klein, where he was creative director. In 1984, Carr started his own line, the Zack Carr Collection, before rejoining Calvin Klein in 1987. The papers consist of material produced and compiled between 1969 and 2000, and include idea books, photographs, news clippings, student work, and a large number of fashion sketches.

Robert Carreon student work

Robert Carreon produced the drawings in this collection as part of his coursework at Parsons School of Design from 1966 until 1968, with the exception of eight drawings from his admissions portfolio and a drawing of a dress and cape that Carreon created for his sister's winter wedding while he was enrolled at Parsons. According to Carreon, student assignments followed a structured workflow: fashion design students maintained a sketchbook (not included in the collection), which they periodically reviewed with the head of the Fashion Design Department, Ann Keagy. She would select ideas from the sketchbook for students to further develop into more formal drawings, which she would also critique. These drawings form the bulk of this collection. Some of Carreon's drawings bear her annotations. Designs that passed this second critique would become renderings that designer critics reviewed with the students. Students were encouraged to experiment with different techniques, a practice evident in Carreon's drawings. He struggled with rendering the human face, and adopted a method of drawing the human figure to compensate for this. Drawings in the collection are typically executed in pencil and gouache, although there are some examples of drawings rendered only in ink to emphasize construction. Carreon annotated the drawings to indicate fabrics used and the collection or assignment. In many cases, manufacturers provided the fabrics and professors issued prompts based on the availability of a type of fabric or fur. Carreon signed his work "Rob" until his third year, in which he switched to "Robert." This was used to roughly date his work when no date is inscribed on a drawing. Additionally, he dropped the hemlines of the dresses and skirts he designed during his third year in a class with critic Chester Weinberg, and this development was also used to establish rough dates for the drawings. In addition to original drawings, the collection contains publicity materials featuring Carreon's work while he was a student.

Edith d'Errecalde papers

Edith d'Errecalde (1905-2002) worked for Mainbocher in the 1940s and started her own sportswear company, Maxmil, in 1951. Later d'Errecalde worked for Evan-Picone and as fashion director for Cohama (Cohn-Hall-Marx). The d'Errecalde papers consist of photographs, sketches, news clippings, advertisements, press kits, correspondence, and notes and manuscripts for articles and lectures. D'Errecalde was a critic and lecturer at Parsons School of Design in 1969-1970.

Dero Darwin, Jr. papers

Ethel Dean papers

The collection includes class notes and a clip book documenting decorative styles compiled by Ethel Epstein (who later used the surnames Dean and Evans) when she was a student at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) in the Interior Architecture and Decoration Department, around 1925. Also includes textile and wallpaper samples designed by Dean, probably dating from the 1950s, and a portfolio of her costume design drawings for the Broadway production of "The Laughing Woman" (1936).

Stanley Diamond papers

Stanley Diamond (1922-1991) was an anthropologist and poet instrumental in establishing the Anthropology Department of the New School for Social Research. He chaired the department for fourteen years, during which time he founded and edited the journal Dialectical Anthropology. These papers document Diamond's writings and research, as well as his role as teacher and administrator at the New School for Social Research and elsewhere, and material related to his participation in conferences and public seminars. Includes drafts of journal articles and presentations, enthnographic research data and notes, teaching materials, and correspondence with colleagues and publishers. Materials span the entirety of Diamond's career, from his doctoral dissertation on the Kingdom of Dahomey to his later interest in the intersection of anthropology and poetry. Fiona Walker Dieffenbacher student work and teaching examples

Menswear fashion sketch collection

Eighteen original fashion illustrations donated by the menswear fashion magazine, DNR (Daily News Record). Sketches in the collection are executed in colored pencil, marker, and watercolors. Designers represented include John Rocha, Tommy Hilfiger, Nina Ricci, Claude Montana, Jose Levy, Paco Rabanne, Gilles Rosier, Joseph Abboud, and Olivier Strelli.

Raymond Driscoll scrapbook and fashion sketches

With a career that extended from the 1930s to the 1960s, Raymond Driscoll (1915-2004) was perhaps most widely known for his annual best and worst-dressed lists. He also achieved recognition for his costume designs for Mexican film stars. The collection is comprised of Driscoll's scrapbook of photographs, news clippings, invitations, and greeting cards from film stars and politicians documenting his work in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as original fashion sketches.

Raoul Dufy woodcut print

A second edition woodblock atelier print from an edition of 220, printed in 1953, from a 1910 woodcut. In 1924, Dufy used the woodblock, with others from the series, to produce printed textiles for the Lyons-based firm, Bianchini-Férier, with whom he had a long association.

Arnold Eagle photographs

Arnold Eagle (1909-1992) emigrated to New York from Hungary in 1929. He became a documentary photographer in the 1930s and, in 1945, joined a remarkable roster of photographers hired by Standard Oil of New Jersey to produce a visual record of the benefits of oil in the lives of everyday Americans, and, in the process, creating an extensive photographic record of American life during the 1940s. Later, Eagle's work encompassed subjects ranging from modern dance to corporate workplaces. He also became enamored of filmmaking and worked as a cinematographer and director. In 1955, Eagle joined the faculty of the New School for Social Research, where he taught photography and filmmaking until shortly before his death. The collection consists of black and white photographic prints produced by Eagle, primarily from the 1940s and 1950s. The photos predominantly document landscapes, human labor and machinery at industrial and agricultural sites around the United States, Mexico and Cuba. Industries represented include cabinetry, mining, and mattresses; agricultural operations include sugar cane production.

Suzy Ehrlich fashion illustrations

Suzy Lorraine Ehrlich (1919-2006), was a New York-based fashion illustrator and product designer. The collection is comprised of 69 fashion illustrations executed in pen and ink, pastel, crayon, watercolor, and collage. It also includes two mailers advertising Milliken yarns. Some illustrations may have been executed for a class taught by Jack Potter at the School of Visual Arts.

Harvey Enders collection

Harvey Enders (1892-1947) was a composer and bass-baritone soloist. Enders' compositional output was mostly vocal, with a focus on choral and song settings of poetry. The Harvey Enders Collection contains several manuscripts of his "Dramatic Song Narrative for Baritone and Orchestra," a song setting for the Langston Hughes poem, "Death in Harlem."

Carl Erickson (Eric) fashion illustrations

Carl Erickson (1891-1958), who signed his work "Eric," was a leading fashion illustrator whose drawings appeared in Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, among other publications. In 1964, Parsons School of Design hosted a retrospective of Erickson's work. The New School Archives' collection consists of fourteen works, possibly originating from that exhibit.

Bea Feitler papers

Bea Feitler (1938-1982) graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1959 with a degree in Graphic Arts and Advertising. She went on to lead an illustrious career as a designer of books, magazines, posters, record album covers and more. Feitler served as art director for Harper's Bazaar and Ms; was consulting art director for Condé Nast, where she created the look for Self magazine; and designed for Rolling Stone magazine. Professional work in the Feitler collection includes layouts, dummies and other pre-publication work; and photographs and contact sheets by a number of the distinguished photographers with whom Feitler worked. Personal materials include mail art, correspondence, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, original drawings and collages.

Roy Fleming collection

Canadian elementary school teacher Roy F. Fleming (1878-1958) produced the notebook and drawing in this collection while attending the New York School of Art (later, Parsons School of Design) between 1902 and 1907. Fleming's notes are accompanied by detailed pen and ink sketches illustrating lectures by Frank Alvah Parsons, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri, and others. The collection also includes a 1902 photograph of Fleming, his diploma, and a color chart created for art instruction.

Lorraine Fox offprints, transparencies, and tear sheets

Lorraine Fox (1922-1976) began her career in commercial illustration in the 1940s. She went on to become one of the most celebrated female illustrators of the mid-20th century. The collection, which spans the final decade of Fox's life, includes print proofs, transparencies and tear sheets of album covers, magazine and book illustrations, greeting cards, and advertising materials, including a promotional packet for Haldol. Fox taught at Parsons School of Design from 1965 until shortly before her death in 1976.

William Frawley fashion sketches

Contains eight watercolor sketches by Frawley, who graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1983 and returned as an instructor from 1989 to 1996. Frawley is known for his illustrations in Parsons classmate Isaac Mizrahi's The Adventures of Sandee the Supermodel.

James Galanos sketches for Jimi Originals

In 1950, fashion designer James Galanos (1924- ) started Jimi Originals with Mary Scourby. The company only existed for a short time, but it was the first company to market Galanos' creations under his name. The collection consists of twelve Jimi Originals fashion sketches as well as invoices and notes. Galanos was a critic at Parsons School of Design from 1962 to 1968.

Francis J. Geck papers

Francis Geck (1900-2005) graduated from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) in 1924 and taught interior design at the school's Paris Ateliers until 1927. Following a professional career in his native Detroit, Geck became a professor of Fine Arts at University of Colorado, where he taught for 39 years. The papers contain correspondence with Parsons administrators, including Frank Alvah Parsons, design renderings and student work, publications, and course-related materials.

Mary Gettrust collection

Mary Frances Gettrust (Mrs. Maury G. Baker) attended the New York School of Art (later, Parsons School of Design) from 1936 until her graduation in 1939 with a diploma in Costume Design and Illustration. Gettrust served as an instructor of Costume Illustration at Parsons in the 1940s. The collection consists of a partial student notebook of costume sketches with instructor comments, printed examples of Gettrust's work as a professional fashion illustrator, and correspondence from Parsons Alumni Association, and Parsons-related ephemera.

In addition to serving as art director for Mademoiselle magazine in the early 1950s, Golbin created artwork for a diverse roster of clients, including several modern dance companies, Henri Bendel, and American Cyanamid. The New School Archives holds examples of Golbin's drawings and completed projects in the form of book jackets, children's books, catalogs, and assorted promotional materials.

Jeremiah Goodman interior design renderings

Fred Greenhill fashion illustrations

Fred Greenhill (1925-2007) graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1950. He went on to work as a fashion illustrator for Neiman Marcus in the 1950s, and was the primary artist for Saks Fifth Avenue in the 1960s and early 1970s. Greenhill is most recognized for his Lord & Taylor illustrations, including the company's trademark long-stemmed rose. The New School Archives holds approximately 700 fashion illustrations that Greenhill created from the 1960s through the 1980s.

Herbert Sondheim (1895-1966), who taught at Parsons School of Design in 1946, ran a dressmaking business that produced affordable versions of Parisian high-end fashion. The collection includes 19 Herbert Sondheim, Inc. scrapbooks, the bulk of which contain fashion drawings and sketches. Included in some books are sketches depicting the work of Vionnet, Chanel, Molyneux, and other couture houses. The sketches were used by Sondheim designers as templates and inspiration in the early days of a globalized fashion industry. Two scrapbooks are comprised of news clippings, photographs and correspondence from the mid-1940s.

Margaret Hodge Company project files

After graduating from Parsons School of Design in 1945, Margaret Hodge became director of fashion marketing at Vogue, and in 1967 established her own fashion publicity business. Hodge led multiple marketing campaigns, tying clothing lines to the style and fashion of Hollywood films. The collection largely consists of examples of promotional material from Hollywood films, including publicity, set and costume design photographs, press kits, event announcements and tear sheets. The bulk of the material was produced between 1962 and 1976.

Michael Kalil (1943-1991) was an interior architect, philosopher, educator and artist, known for his innovative work with new materials and for humanizing digital technologies. From 1981 to 1991, he was the principal of Kalil Designs/Kalil Studio, a firm that specialized in high profile commercial, prototype and theoretical, and residential design commissions. Kalil also was an adjunct faculty member at the Parsons School of Design, and taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The collection includes Kalil's personal and professional papers, including original artwork, sketchbooks, journals, photographs, project records, architectural drawings, photoprints and sketches, design prototypes, and posthumous materials.

Charles Le Maire (1897-1985) began his costume design career in the 1920s creating costumes for vaudevillian musicals and revues. Later, he served as executive designer for Twentieth Century-Fox. In the 1950s, Le Maire established his own business in Hollywood, taking private commissions and continuing his film design work, and earning thirteen Oscar nominations and three Oscars for Best Costume Design. The collection consists of seventeen Le Maire sketches, including work for the Earl Carroll Vanities (1924-1930) and unidentified sketches from the 1950s.

Dating primarily from the mid-1950s through the 1980s, materials in the collection include woodblocks and prints, original artwork and proofs Lighter's numerous professional book and album cover design projects, and advertisements. The collection also includes examples of Lighter's work in acrylics, pen and ink, watercolors, and pencil, as well as items of a biographical nature, such as his professional presentation portfolio and flyers and press releases for exhibitions of his work.

Seymour Lipton sketches for sculptures

Robert Mackintosh costume and fashion design work

Robert Mackintosh (1925-1998) was a costume and fashion designer whose design career spanned forty years and twenty Broadway productions. He made his Broadway debut designing costumes for the 1952 musical Wish You Were Here and went on to design costumes for both on and off-Broadway productions. In the 1960s, Mackintosh branched out into womenswear design with Musette, a juniors label, which was sold at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. He went on to design various other womens and menswear lines in the 1970s. The bulk of the collection consists of costume sketches, technical sheets, and swatches from theatrical productions, including The Last Minstrel Show, and Mame. Also included are clippings, fashion publicity, and promotional photographs, as well as approximately 150 women's fashion sketches, and nine menswear sketches.

Lyman Martin interior decoration work and papers

Lyman Martin (1908-2003) graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1939 and went to work for Thedlow, a prestigious interior decoration firm. After serving in World War II, Martin returned to Thedlow, where he created interiors, produced watercolor renderings, designed rugs and painted murals for clients. In 1969, Martin was appointed president of Thedlow and stayed until the company closed in 1979. The collection includes student work, renderings and drawings of interiors, sketches, an illustrated European travel diary, floor plans, photographs, news clippings, and exhibition records.

Claire McCardell fashion sketches

Claire McCardell (1905-1958) graduated from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) in 1928 and went on to become a pivotal figure in the creation of American ready-to-wear clothing. McCardell received the Coty American Fashion Critics Award in 1944, and in the same year returned to Parsons as a critic and instructor, a position she held for the rest of her life. The Kellen Design Archives has approximately 9,000 of McCardell's working sketches, covering the years 1931-1958; the bulk were produced for Townley Frocks. The collection also includes sketches by Mildred Orrick and Scaasi (Arnold Isaacs) for Townley Frocks.

Violet Holsinger Mueller (1907-2003) studied fashion design at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) from 1926 through 1929. She worked as an interior designer for the St. Louis-based department store, Stix, Baer & Fuller for over two decades, and also established her own design consultancy in Belleville, Illinois. Her papers include personal materials, as well as documentation created over the course of her education at Parsons and her professional career. Student work includes a number of assignments demonstrating the principles of Dynamic Symmetry in design education.

Esta Nesbitt fashion illustrations

Esta Nesbitt (1918-1975), an instructor at Parsons School of Design from 1964 to 1974, created fashion illustrations for such publications as Harper's Bazaar, Mademoiselle, and the New York Times Magazine. Later in her career, Nesbitt employed innovative printing techniques as a children's book illustrator, created performance art pieces, and was one of the earliest to experiment with fine art Xerography. Nesbitt's work in the New School Archives primarily consists of 271 original fashion illustrations, as well as pre-publication layouts, mechanicals, proofs, and tear sheets.

Collection of prints by eighteen British artists of the 1960s and 1970s

The collection consists of work by eighteen artists who worked in the printmaking medium in Great Britain during the 1960s and '70s. All works are prints on paper and most are completely or largely abstract. The majority are screen prints, although there are also lithographs and intaglios. Many are characterized by bold blocks of color and exhibit a Pop influence. It is not known whether the works in this collection were all printed in the same studio, nor are the circumstances known under which they were donated to the Kellen Design Archives. However, many of the artists in the collection are of the same generation, knew one another, and many are frequently exhibited together. All were members of a thriving art scene in Great Britain during the 1960s and '70s, at a time when screen printing was gaining increasing acceptance as a technique for creating works of fine art, after having long been used primarily for producing commercial graphics. Includes work by David Annesley, Patrick Caulfield, Pierre Celice, Bernard Cohen, Elisabeth Frink, Patrick Heron, Gordon House, John Hoyland, Patrick Hughes, Liliane Lijn, Kim Lim, Kenneth Martin, Nicholas Monro, Tom Phillips, Patrick Procktor, William Scott, Colin Self, and William Turnbull.

Norman Norell collection

Norman Norell (1900-1972) was the first American fashion designer to compete successfully with French couture. In 1943, he received the first Coty American Fashion Critics Award, and in 1956 he was inducted into the Coty Hall of Fame. Norell served as a visiting critic at Parsons School of Design from 1943 to 1972. The collection includes awards, biographical material, clippings, fashion sketches, photographs, publicity scrapbooks, and five examples of Norell's clothing.

William Odom collection of book endpapers

William Odom (1884?-1942) attended the New York School of Art (later, Parsons School of Design) around 1909. He returned to teach at Parsons for many years, eventually heading the department of Interior Design, and, in 1930, succeeding Frank Alvah Parsons as president of the school. In 1930, Odom succeeded Frank Alvah Parsons as president of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art. He served in this capacity until his death. The collection consists of Odom's research collection of decorative book endpapers.

Fashion print scrapbook collection

Consists of 19 scrapbooks containing more than 10,000 prints of fashion illustrations produced between the early 1800s and 1913. The prints primarily depict men's, women's, and children's clothing and accessories, with a small number of images depicting theatrical costumes, architectural and sculptural details, and textile designs. One scrapbook contains swatches of French and Asian textiles. Many of the images were issued originally as portfolio prints, others cut from books and periodicals, such as Graham's Magazine and Godey's Lady's Book and Magazine. The majority of the earlier prints are of French origin.

Frank Alvah Parsons correspondence and tribute by James Wilfrid Kerr

The project was begun by Ronald G. Pisano (1948-2000) and completed by D. Frederick Baker and Carolyn Lane after Pisano's death. Files include correspondence with auction houses, museums, galleries, libraries, archives, and individual owners of Chase work; authentication reports; photographs of Chase work; exhibition and auction records; news clippings and articles by and about Chase; and photographs and correspondence from Chase's lifetime (mostly obtained as photocopies from other institutions).

Ranging from the 1920s through the 1960s, the Jessica Rummel interior decoration working files consist of the files Rummel kept for her New York City-based interior decoration business, which operated during at least part of this period as Harding & Rummel, Inc. The files, which Rummel arranged under subjects such as "Fireplace equipment," "Quilting," "Decorative motifs," and "Egyptian," include small drawings, watercolors, site plans, and tracings of decorative elements, furniture, textiles, and interior layouts produced by Rummel in the course of doing business. The collection also includes vendor literature, magazine and catalog clippings, postcards, price lists, and business correspondence. Rummel was on the faculty of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons The New School for Design) in the Interior Architecture and Decoration Department from 1921 through 1934.

John Russo graphic design work

Fashion runway slide collection

Saks Fifth Avenue compiled this collection of more than 1,100 slides depicting fashion runway shows during the 1990s. The 35 mm slides depict haute couture and ready-to-wear collections from an international array of fashion designers and houses. Designers represented in the collection include Adrienne Vittadini, Bill Blass, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Issey Miyake, Max Mara, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Rifat Ozbek, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Yves Saint-Laurent, and many others. Former Parsons School of Design students include but are not limited to Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Badgley Mischka, Isaac Mizrahi, Charlotte Neuville, Anna Sui, and Yeohlee Teng. In addition to providing a rich visual record of the dramatic evolution of style over the course of two decades, the photographs, reproductions of fashion sketch sheets, press releases and other materials shed light on Saks' fashion business development and marketing strategy under the leadership of Helen O'Hagan, who succeeded Grace de Mun as Saks publicity director.

Francesca Sammaritano student work and teaching examples

The collection is comprised of two student project notebooks maintained by Francesca Sammaritano while she was a Fashion BFA student at Parsons School of Design in the late 1980s and two examples of student work created in classes Sammaritano taught as a professor. Sammaritano's student work consists of a two-volume pattern drafting notebook created for a class taught by Fashion Design Department faculty member Marie Marino. Another notebook features notes and pattern pieces for creating a notched collar jacket and was maintained for a senior class taught by Theresa Chiappetta. Sammaritano advises that she constructed a jacket based on the notebook and sold the resultant piece to her college roommate. These notebooks provide detailed instructions for a wide variety of sewing and pattern drafting techniques, along with both illustrated examples and three-dimensional fabric examples sewn by Sammaritano, including small skirts and partial pieces of full-sized jackets. The collection also includes two notebooks produced by Sammaritano's students, selected by Sammaritano as outstanding examples of student work. One notebook was created by junior Fay Chen Fitch in a design studio draping class Sammaritano taught in her first year as an adjunct professor. The second notebook is a thesis project completed by student Alejandra Kohara in April 2006. Fabric samples and envelopes containing full pattern sets are stored separately from the other components of each notebook. Through examples of both Sammaritano and her students’ work, this collection provides insight into the learning and teaching processes employed by Parsons students and professors in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

James Vinton Stowell graduated from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons The New School for Design) in 1917 with an Advertising Design degree, and was employed by the school as a trade representive through the 1918-1919 academic year. The subject of the pencil sketch, titled "Portrait of 'Our Mr. Baker,'" is Harry B. Baker, who taught life drawing at the school from 1915 until his death in 1941. The sketch is accompanied by an envelope, written by an unidentified person identifying the artist, erroneously, as C. Vinton Stowell, with the title. The envelope also identifies the sketch as having been done in "1913(?)," which is probably incorrect.

Margaret McKay Tee papers

Margaret McKay Tee (1882-1955) came to New York from Cripple Creek, Colorado in 1902 to attend Cooper Union. Frank Alvah Parsons, whom she met at Columbia Teacher's College, later hired Tee as a student instructor at the New York School of Art (soon thereafter renamed the New York School of Fine and Applied Art). After moving back to Colorado, Tee carried on a correspondence with Parsons for many years. Tee's papers include correspondence from Frank Alvah Parsons, photographs of Tee's paintings, and an autobiographical essay in which Tee describes her upbringing in the West, and her experiences as a young art student in New York City.

Eugene Paul Ullman papers

Eugene Paul Ullman (1877-1953), was an American painter of landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. Ullman studied and later taught with artist William Merritt Chase during the earliest years of the Chase School, predecessor school to what became Parsons School of Design. Ullman then moved from New York to Paris, where he briefly joined James Abbott McNeil Whistler's atelier and began receiving major awards for his work. The collection consists of artwork in the form of sketches and photographs of paintings, correspondence, exhibition catalogs, a scrapbook, and unpublished essay manuscripts. Much of the material is annotated by Ullman's youngest son, Pierre L. Ullman. Also included are files documenting the life of an older son, Paul Ullman, who was killed in France during the Second World War.

Arthur J. Vidich papers

Arthur J. Vidich (1922-2006) was a long-term member of the faculty at the New School for Social Research as a professor of Sociology (1960-1991). He published dozens of books, papers, and edited anthologies, notably Small Town in Mass Society: Class, Power, and Religion in a Rural Community (1958). This collection contains material documenting his teaching, writing, public lectures, and other academic and professional activities that spans his entire career, from graduate school at Harvard until his death in 2006. Included are correspondence with colleagues, friends, and presses; manuscript and typescript drafts of his writings; conference and lecture materials; subject files relating to his colleagues and personal life; and items pertaining to his teaching at the New School and other institutions, as well as his role as chair of the New School Sociology Department; photographs; and audio and video recordings of lectures, talks, and courses.

Michaele Vollbracht fashion illustrations

Fashion illustrator Michaele Vollbracht (1947- ) graduated from Parsons in 1968, and has since returned periodically as a visiting critic. After working as a design assistant for Geoffrey Beene, Donald Brooks, and Norman Norell, Vollbracht turned to fashion illustration and portraiture. In 1985 Vollbracht published Nothing Sacred, an illustrated memoir, and in 2000 Parsons mounted an exhibition of his work to celebrate the release of the updated version of the book. The bulk of the collection is comprised of fashion illustrations and designer portraits Vollbracht created for a 1972 fashion show celebrating Parsons School of Design's 75th anniversary and the establishment of the school's Gimbel Library. Also includes a sketch of Vollbracht's iconic Bloomingdale's shopping bag of 1975.

Raymond Waldron papers

Raymond S. Waldron, Jr. (1913-2002) attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) from 1938-1941. After serving in World War II, Waldron worked for Lord & Taylor. In 1965, he established his own interior decoration firm. The Raymond Waldron papers include his student work, a travel sketchbook, and professional files. Work from Waldron's years at New York School of Fine and Applied Art include notebooks with graded assignments, instructor handouts, sketches, and tracings; and larger-format renderings of European interiors and sites. A travel sketchbook reflects Waldron's later design studies in New York, France and Italy. Materials from Waldron's professional career include project files, design research, stereo slides of the Blair House, among other projects, and publicity for his business.

Joset Walker fashion design scrapbooks

French-born Joset Walker (1902-1999) graduated from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (later, Parsons School of Design) in 1928, and soon became a leading designer of ready-to-wear clothing for Saks Fifth Avenue's Theatrical Department. In 1932, Walker served briefly as head costume designer for RKO Pictures, working under the name Josette De Lima. She returned to New York and began designing for wholesale manufacturer David M. Goodstein in 1940, before leaving the company to found Joset Walker Designs. Often incorporating Mexican and Guatamalan textiles, colors and styles into her designs for the American market, Walker reached the pinnacle of her career in the 1940s and '50s as a designer of casual, feminine clothing for women. The Joset Walker collection includes pages from Walker's scrapbooks, largely comprised of clippings of advertisements for her designs, but also including publicity, photographs of department store window displays, and ephemera documenting Walker's career.

Chester Weinberg publicity scrapbook and sketch

Chester Weinberg (1931-1985) graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1951 and served as a visiting critic and lecturer on fashion design at the school from 1955 to 1985. Weinberg rose to fame in the 1960s, establishing his own label, Chester Weinberg Ltd. in 1966. He later became a consultant and was appointed design director of Calvin Klein jeans in 1981. The collection consists of a scrapbook containing news clippings, fashion print ads, and photographs primarily chronicling Weinberg’s career from 1966 until 1975, and one fashion sketch.

John Weitz papers

A leading figure in the development of American ready-to-wear clothing, John Weitz (1923-2002) established one of the first American signature menswear lines. Through various licensing arrangements combined with self-referential advertising campaigns, he established an international consumer base. In addition to fashion design, Weitz pursued an array of other interests, becoming a successful race car driver, yachtsman, bestselling author and photographer. Weitz was a visiting lecturer at Parsons School of Design between 1975 and 1995. The collection includes sketches and design drawings, exhibition files, scrapbooks, newspaper and magazine clippings, publications, photographs, and audiovisual recordings of promotional campaigns, fashion shows and television commercials.

Edward Wormley papers

Edward Wormley (1907-1995) is often cited as one of the top 20th century designers of American modernist furniture. Beginning at the Dunbar Furniture Company at the age of 23, Wormley eventually became sole designer for the company and maintained a partnership Dunbar for more than three decades. In the 1950s, many of his designs received Good Design designations at the annual Chicago Merchandise Mart/Museum of Modern Art exhibition. Wormley taught at Parsons School of Design between 1952 and 1970. The collection includes photographs, slides, biographical materials, news clippings, technical drawings, Dunbar catalogs, and several original sketches.

Frieda Wunderlich papers

Frieda Wunderlich (b.1884-d.1965) was a member of the University-in-Exile (also known as the Graduate Faculty, later known as the New School for Social Research). A professor, political representative and editor of an anti-Nazi magazine in her native Germany, Wunderlich came to the New School in 1933 and continued her research on social problems, labor markets and resource allocation, while teaching into the 1950s. The collection consists of files and topically-themed notebooks, presumably labeled by Wunderlich, with identifications such as, Welf[are] State War, Coll[ective] Barg[aining]/Labor Law/NLRB [National Labor Relations Board], and Labor in Politics.

Giuseppe Zambonini papers

Giuseppe Zambonini (1942-1990) was an Italian-born and, for much of his life, New York-based, architect, interior designer, theater director, and teacher. This collection contains project material in a variety of mediums pertaining to Zambonini’s architectural and design career, as well as items related to his tenure as dean of the New York School of Interior Design (NYSID), founder and head of the Open Atelier of Design (OAD), and director of the architecture program at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dating primarily from the 1960s through the late-1980s, materials in the collection include sketches, drawings, plans, and blueprints of Zambonini’s architecture and interior design projects, as well as photographs of the building sites and finished work. Also included are correspondence, photographs, and printed material related to the institutional functioning and teaching at NYSID and OAD. Zambonini’s work as a theater producer and director in Italy is represented by photographs, scripts, audio, and a variety of posters and programs. Finally, the collection contains a small selection of Zambonini’s writings and lectures.
